As we make our way through the north shore and begin to head towards the east side of the island, one of the most serene and breathtaking spots you can find for a photo session in Kauai is Anini Beach. For an even more secluded spot, continue past the boat launch, as the road narrows into one lane and turns to dirt. You’ll soon arrive at our favorite spot at Anini—featured in several magazines for its picturesque beauty. The shallow waters, abundant overhanging palm trees, golden sands, and contrasting black lava rocks create an iconic tropical backdrop.

Moloaa Bay

Another one of our absolute favorite locations, which falls between the east side of the island and the lush north shore, is Moloaa Bay. If you want your photos to feel like you’re stranded on a beautiful, secluded island, look no further than Moloaa Beach, where the intro to Gilligan’s Island was filmed! For those who prefer not to travel all the way to Princeville or Hanalei Bay, Moloaa is a perfect alternative, offering lush tropical deserted island vibes without the long drive. The area is part of the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, where you’ll have the chance to see rare and endangered bird species. This wildlife refuge is also home to the famous Kilauea Lighthouse, which is just a short drive from Anini Beach. While Moloaa is a sacred agricultural and residential area, its recessed location provides a peaceful setting for photoshoots. We usually start our sessions a little earlier here to capture those magical golden rays before the sun dips behind the trees, leaving us with soft, flattering light for the remainder of the shoot. With its towering palm trees and striking lava rock formations, Moloaa offers a breathtaking backdrop for adventurous family portraits or romantic couple shots.

Kealia Beach

For those who prefer a more accessible option without sacrificing the beauty of their Kauai photo session, Kealia Beach is an excellent choice. Located conveniently along the eastern shore, this beach offers stunning views without the need for extensive travel. It’s a fantastic backup option for anyone staying nearby or not wanting to venture far, yet still eager to capture the essence of Kauai’s natural beauty. With its golden sands, crashing waves, and expansive shoreline, Kealia Beach is perfect for a relaxed, easy-going session that showcases the island’s charm. Whether you're a returning visitor or new to the island, this spot is an ideal blend of convenience and breathtaking scenery.

Mahaulepu Beach

Mahaulepu Beach offers an incredible, rugged coastline experience for those who don’t mind a bit of adventure. To get down to Mahaulepu, we usually take the Makauwahi Cave Trail, which has native and non-indigenous plants marked along the way. This trail is not just scenic, but also rich in history, so we encourage all visitors to be respectful of the land by staying on the trail. Additionally, be mindful of the horse trail as the CJM Stables offers horseback riding along the Mahaulepu Beach coastline, which adds an extra layer of charm to the area. You’ll have to drive down a long dirt road and park next to the left-hand side of the CJM stables. From there, you can walk down to the beach and discover an archaeological site—a sinkhole with a fascinating history. Continuing on, you’ll find a land tortoise sanctuary, all run by volunteers. Plus, the start of the Mahaulepu Heritage Trail takes off from the Shipwreck Beach parking lot, making it perfect for those who want to explore both stunning landscapes in one day.
